If the early settlers of the Gardena area of Los Angeles County had waited a couple of hundred years, they would have found traveling much easier. Gardena is known today as the "Freeway City" because it has easy access to four interstate highway systems, giving residents a straight shot at almost anywhere they are going. But before there were freeways, there were railways and Gardena came in for its share of rail accommodations. Railroads, notably the Los Angeles-Redondo line, put Gardena on the map after Los Angeles began booming in the 1880s.

Since California's highway mania didn't start in the 1700s, it was hoof it or nothing for people such as Juan Jose Dominguez, a spanish soldier who was granted some 43,000 acres of land in 1769 in recognition of his military service. The Rancho San Pedro contained the area that became known as Gardena Valley. The name, reflected the fact that it was the only "green spot" between Los Angeles and the sea in the old days. Today, all of that green is buried under housing.

The city is the home to America's largest concentration of Japanese-Americans. They add a distinctive cultural dimension to the city. They own many of Gardena's businesses and in 1970 this fact drew attention from 60 Minutes, which made the city the subject of a special report.

Like all of Gardena's citizens, those of Oriental origin enjoy the services of a group of mobile notaries who travel to any requested site to serve their clientele.

Gardena incorporated in September 1930 to avoid being subjected to a hefty county tax that was to be imposed on a planned project.

Gardena had a long history of being California's "Berry Land, with a huge local draw to the annual Strawberry Day Festival and Parade. But post Worldl War II economics saw a shift from agriculture. From 1936 to 1980, the city budget was plumped up by taxes on legal card rooms, on which the city held a local monopoly. Now, there would have been he ideal place to meet with a Gardena notary to be certain all your legal documents were in good shape, properly notarized, before setting down to the cards.

Located just 15 miles south of Los Angeles and provided with multi-freeway access, the city has an easy run to the big city for a glut of entertainment possibilities. But if you are the stay-at-home sort, there are the Normandie and Hustler casinos. The Normandie houses a large multi-ethnic restaurant and a sports bar. Regularly scheduled concert and sporting events are included on its ongoing agenda. You also are just a jog away from the entertainment-rich cities of Long Beach and Anaheim. (Disney, anyone?)
