La Canada. Skip the English version of Canada. Go for La Con-yada. That old Spanish en-yay at work. However you choose to pronounce it, La Canada is what happened when La Canada and Flintridge, Calif., got together and became an official California city in 1976. The name means canyon, gorge or ravine.

Before it became La Canada, it was the property of newspaper magnate E. Manchester Boddy, owner of the Los Angeles Daily News. He operated a commercial camellia garden at the location, supplying such things as prom boutonnieres. In 1953, he ceded the property to the city and it was expanded to include roses and lilacs, although camellias remain a core attraction, with regular shows spotlighting the bloom. Now it is called the Descanso Gardens.

If you were to contact a La Canada mobile notary at the Boddy Gardens to have a will authenticated, you would be right on the spot to take a ride on the miniature railway that takes visitors around parts of the park. The railway is an eighth-scale replica of a diesel train. Your notary could probably recite other attractions, such as the annual tulip shows that occur in the spring. Or visit Boddy's original home. The 22-room mansion is in the southeast part of the property, with a good view of the lush San Gabriel Mountains. It is available for special events. and is open weekdays with the exception of Monday for tours.

During the height of World War II, when Japanese-Americans were being shuttled into internment camps, Boddy bought out two major Japanese flower nurseries, adding up to 100,000 camellia s to his collection.

But forget the flowers for awhile and visit the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a NASA field center, managed by the California Institute of Technology and has a mission of forwarding America's involvement in space travel and astronomy, contributing to the knowledge of Earth's space neighbors. It is the core of the NASA robotic spacecraft experiments and also conducts earth-orbit and astronomy missions.

Add to the list of La Canada accomplishments: the first Frisbee golf course in the country. It is located in the Hahamongna Watershed Park, located (conveniently for the local teens) across the street from the local high school.

The La Canada Town Center opened in 2008, offering an array of eating places, retail stores and other features. Sport Chalet's flagship store was there until it closed in 2016. The stores that remain offer plenty of choice for discriminating shoppers.

The Lanternman House, built in 1915, has been converted to a museum and local history archive. The Congregational Church also harks back to an earlier time. It used to be the Church of the Lighted Window. Also on the list of historic buildings is the Flintridge Biltmore Hotel, opened in about 1927. Now it is the administration building for Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy.

Some old things get repurposed in our busy world. But some things remain the same. For instance, you can without any qualms rely on a La Canada traveling notary to understand the legal needs of his or her clients and provide services that will made any and all documents clearly within the law's requirements.
