When Lawndale incorporated on Dec. 28, 1959, the blatant reason was preserved in the official documents: "to forestall being gobbled up by surrounding communities through annexation." It was a period when jockeying for official community status was a California sport. Lawndale was one of the last cities to incorporate in the South Bay section of Los Angeles County.

Pre-incorporation, the community had a long history going back to the era when Spain controlled much of the land that would become California. Lawndale was one of a half-dozen cities that grew out of the area called Rancho Sausal-Redondo, a huge land grant of some 40,000 acres. After the United States took control of California under terms made when the Mexican/American War ended, the rancho was reduced to some 22,000 acres.

Land that had been devoted to agricultural pursuits began to segue into communities in the late 1800s. Development in the Inglewood area slopped over into what became Lawndale and the advent of railroads fueled the transition. In 1902, the Los Angeles and Redondo line began to run along what is now Hawthorne Avenue. Then, the electric train was an olive green. In 1911, it changed to red when Pacific Electric absorbed the original railroad. Agriculture remained a mainstay of the Lawndale area, with the railroad to distribute the bounty to a wider market.

For a time, Lawndale remained a backwater, without even the presence of a mobile notary to serve the population. Thank goodness, the situation has been reversed. With a single phone call, you can have one standing at attention and ready to get on with the authentication of documents you need. These folks are trained and authorized by the state to authenticate all types of official papers,, including wills, deeds, powers of attorney, mortgage documents and a list of others. It's a rare individual in today's world who hasn't had the need at some time for a notary's seal.

Serious development of the community began in 1905 when real estate man Charles B. Hopper founded Lawndale and tried to sell house lots. Takers were few and in 1906 he made another bid for settlers. By 1910, the town had 142 residents.

What saved Lawndale from obscurity was the discovery of oil in the area in the 1920s. A boom lasted until the late 1920s, when, like the rest of the country, Lawndale slid into the Great Depression. Even the stimulus of World War II, which affected most area communities positively, generally bypassed Lawndale. But after the war, housing demands for the country's vets, coupled with highway construction, gave new life to the area.

The city survived the annexation wars by incorporating in 1959. The move gave the city the added tax income from businesses along Hawthorne Boulevard.

The traveling notaries who now serve Lawndale can claim notoriety-by-association with one of Hollywood's quintessential cowboys, Roy Rogers. Wonder if Rogers ever needed the kind of service today's notaries routinely provide for California residents. For instance, say that Roy was building a new home for his equally famed horse and needed to have his property purchase authenticated. He would simply pick up the phone, arrange to have a mobile attorney meet him at the location, witness his signature and put his or her seal on the document in question. Nothing to it. Bet Roy would have loved it.
