Los Alamitos (The Little Cottonwoods) is one of those little California towns that has been around for a long time, but is now almost lost in the suburban jungle of Orange County. It is so closely interwoven with neighboring Rossmoor, for instance, that they share the same ZIP Code.

Though it was a cluster of cottonwood trees that attracted Spanish explorers more than 200 years ago, it was the sugar beet that sweetened Los Alamitos' history. A consortium of ambitious men in the 1880s pooled money, land and expertise to build and operate a sugar factory and began growing the beets to fuel the plant. As history had its effect, the acreage that had produced the beets became the Long Beach Airport, Long Beach City College and the city of Lakewood.

A rail line from Los Alamitos to Salt Lake City, with a whistle stop known as Las Vegas in between, also provided a livelihood for people who came to the area.

The days when sugar beets were brought by the wagon loads to the processing factory are long gone. The mobile notaries who serve the city now drive modern vehicles and they are happy to use them to meet clients anywhere it is convenient. They are trained in all the ins and outs of the laws that regulate which documents need a notary's seal and their purpose is to see that all those laws are applied as needed in the client's interest.

When a bad stretch of national economics and insect infestations brought an end to the sugar production, Los Alamitos continued to exist on other agricultural pursuits. Immigrants out of Europe and Japan were encouraged to settle in the area to help raise the crops. During World War II, those Japanese workers were sent to intern camps at Manzanar and elsewhere in the country.

By then, many California towns had turned to the aircraft industry as an economic mainstay, filling orders for the Air Force and Navy. Military training facilities grew up at the same time, with a "touch-and-go" landing strip laid out just east of Los Alamitos, the first military installation in the county. This historic era lives on in streets that were given names related to the military.

After the war, many servicemen decided to remain in the area and the push for housing was on. Among the ambitious builders who designed new neighborhoods was Earle G. Kaltenbach, who also designed Disneyland's original Tomorrowland.

Los Alamitos has long had a symbiotic relationship with Rossmoor, which has never incorporated. The two communities cooperate and benefit from the combined populations. Los Alamitos has strict zoning laws that keep heavy manufacturing at bay. The Armed Forces Reserve Center takes up 48 percent of the town's 4.3 square miles of land.

Nevertheless, you can find a bit of nature in the middle of the city. It's the El Dorado Nature Center, a good place to meet with a traveling notary to take care of essential business before enjoying a day with Mother Nature. He or she can put an official seal on your mortgage documents, for instance. While you're at it, ask about some of the Los Alamitos residents who went on to fame and glory, including baseball Hall of Famer Bob Lemon or Olympic gymnast Cathy Rigby. The sugar is gone, but the sweetness lingers on in Los Alamitos!
