Third smallest of the cities in Los Angeles County, Maywood nevertheless claims the honor of being the most densely populated city in the whole state of California. The 2010 census reported 27,395 residents. The city claimed a "first" in becoming the van guard in the move to shuck all city employees and services in favor of contracted services.

Early on, Maywood was part of a huge tract of land deeded to Manuel Nieto by the king of Spain in the 1700s. What was to become the city was then a cow pasture that was the center of what became a rancho. In 1919, a real estate corporation developed the 2,300 acres of the ranch into a community. It survived an attempt to dissolve the town and continued to grow and thrive. In the 1930s, the community rid itself of gamblers who had settled in and concentrated on becoming a family-focused place to live.

When traveling notaries began to serve the community has not been recorded, but they are there, without question. They make personal business as simple as meeting (at your convenience) making certain that legal papers are properly compiled, witnessing your signature and adding the official seal that makes it airtight.

Among the residents who turned out to celebrate the incorporation ofo the city in September 1924 was Miss May Wood, the ambitious and popular young lady who worked with the development company and who gave her name to the town.

For a period in its history, Maywood was a hotbed of automobile manufacture. Chrysler cars were prodcued at an assembly plant. Across the street was a Ford Motor Co. plant. In 1929, Willys-Overland was added to the list of busy companies producing vehicles in the era when car-ownership became one of the hallmarks of American life.

In World War II, many of the plants were re-tooled to accommodate production of airplanes and other essential war-related items. Jeeps were in high demand and they came off the production lines in the Maywood industrial area.

Memorial Day is big in the Maywood calendar. The city holds its annual Street Fair, attracting locals, family members and friends for a day of food, entertainment, raffles, rides and multi-cultural events. Many people in the area also mark their calendars for the July 4 Family Fun Day celebration, with the focus on honoring America's beginnings.
