Heady stuff! The town gets its name from a man-made lake that is fed by the Los Angeles River and maintained by neighboring property owners. As the water table shrank, the lake disappeared until the Toluca Lake Property Owners Association resurrected it in its present form.

Once part of the Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana, the area now encompassed by Toluca Lake community officially began in 1893 with a petition for a post office. In the same year, trains of the Southern Pacific Railroad began to journey in and out of the town en route to other southern California locations. Even earlier, it was the site of the Kern River Co., a power operation that delivered electricity from its generators to Los Angeles environs. The area produced fine crops of peaches, apples and walnuts as well.

Its more modern development began in the 1920s with the advent of Toluca Lake Park, a housing vision that failed, but opened the way for additional development. Investors envisioned one of the first "bedroom communities" to serve the Los Angeles area.
