Geography and a climate conducive to dry farming had everything to do with the evolution of Westchester, a community in Los Angeles and the westside area of Los Angeles County. That's what people did in the early 20th Century. But all that changed when the word "modern" became popular in California and the aerospace industry came to stay. Mines Field (precursor to LAX) caused all kinds of shuffling in the adjacent neighborhoods. In that era, Westchester hosted the cross country events in the 1932 Summer Olympics.

The community surged by leaps and bounds during World War II. The Los Angeles Times described the community as "a raw suburb, created willy-nilly in the 1940s. As the airport expanded to meet new needs, and became an annoyingly noisy neighbor, several of the city's streets were decomissioned and the homes along them were demolished. In one particularly troublesome period, the city lost 4,500 homes and some 14,000 residents.

Despite the challenges, Westchester has bounced back. An influx of technology companies into the area provided jobs and were incentive for maintaining a thriving community. The nature of the city has changed, but it has found ways to renew its vitality. In 2012-14, Westchester home prices rose by 25 percent, an indication that the city had bounced back from the 2008 recession better than many California cities. The location of the Howard Hughes Center here in 2001 jump-started a new round of development. By 2015, the complex had 1.3 million square feet of offices, businesses, apartments and a renovated shopping mall.

In that atmosphere, folks are happy to call Westchester home. They lack none of the standard California amenities, including the availability of traveling notaries to meet all their needs.A simple phone call will bring one of these professionals in jig time to any location that suits you. They are adept at all the many uses of notarization, thoroughly schooled in the growing list of personal documents that require the witness and seal of a notary to meet legal muster. You'll be familiar with many of them, such as deeds, wills, financial plans, designation of power of attorney or guardianship, etc. But adding the notary's seal is a good idea for sales documents and special arrangements for temporary custody of children or disabled adults and other situations that could conceivably be contested in court.

Westchster has what is believed to be the "best preserved examplL" of the "Googie-style" architecture developed by Eldon Davis. With an angular design and large plate-glass windows, it has been called the "classic coffee shop architecture." It's on La Tiera Boulevard and it was featured in a Los Angeles "hunt for Googie architecture" feature. Another example of the particular architectural type is the Theme Building opened at the Los Angeles International Airport in 1961. The distinctive white building resembles a flying saucer that has landed on its four legs. The Los Angeles City Council designated it cultural and historic monument No. 570 in 1993.

The Otis College of Art and Design is another Westchester point of pride. It was established in 1918 and was Los Angeles' first independent professional school of art. The main campus now occupies what was the former IBM Aerospace Headquarters. The school offers four-year BFA degrees in illustration, fine arts, grapahic design, architecture, landscape design, interior design, fashion design, digital media, toy design and product design. Students can opt to continue on to a master's degree in fine arts, graphic design, public practice and writing. The movie "Art School Confidential" was partially filmed on the Otis campus and some members of the college staff were consultants on the film.
