By California standards, Whittier is small -- less than 15 square miles, and boasting a population around 85,000 souls, but it is an important link in the Gateway Cities. It has been around for awhile, having incorporated in February 1898. It was chartered in 1955.

Poetry lovers will recognize the name borrowed from James Greenleaf Whittier. He was a Quaker by faith, and the name connoted a significant impact people of that persuasion had on Whittier. They built churches and schools and when these wore out, new replacements often retained features of the older buildings.

Its modern history, like that of many of California's long-term towns, began with the arrival of the Spanish in the 1700s. And like many of the soldiers who traveled with the Spanish religionists who settled the coast, Manual Nieto was granted a huge amount of land --300,000 acres, to encourage permanent settlement. A large chunk of the grant was whittled away in a dispute with Mission San Gabriel, but Nieto still had a very substantial pile of land stretching from the red hills to the Pacific Ocean.

After the end of the Mexican War in the late 1840s, a German immigrant, Jacob F. Gerkens paid the U.S. $234 for 160 acres of land in the area. Today, his old cabin, now known as the Jonathan Bailey House, can still be seen. If you were to seek out one of Whittier's traveling notaries, he or she would joyfully meet you there and when the important papers that needed to be notarized are all legal, you can take a step into the past and look around.

If the mobile notary you summoned to help make a power of attorney legal has time, he or she may share with you the story of one of Whittier's disasters. On Oct. 1, 1987, early in the morning, the Whittier Narrows Earthquake struck. There were eight deaths and severe property damage. An aftershock three days later added to the ill effects. The city began rebuilding almost immediately, even though renewed development did not sit well with some residents.

Today's Whittier has much to offer, including theaters and museums. The Rose Hills Memorial Park is the largest single-location cemetery in the world. More than a dozen Whittier sites have been granted National Historical Registry status, providing altogether a pleasant place to wander and to mix business with pleasure as a Whittier notary authenticates your important documents before you move on to such things as an engrossing visit to the old home of Governor Pio Pico, last of the Mexican governors of California, who was instrumental in the development of Whittier's resources.

In 1887, the Southern Pacific Railroad came to town, ending the era when on-foot, by horseback or in a horse-drawn conveyance was the only way to get around. In its first decade, the rail carried more than a million passengers away from Los Angeles to points south. Whittier had its own depot. The railroad also spurred heavy production of the citrus fruits and walnuts that grew abundantly in the area. Agricultural products by the tons rolled out of Whittier to feed populations far away.

As frequently occurred in California at the end of World War II, the groves and orchards disappeared under housing as the state's population went wild. Today, Whittier is a typical California city with a diverse economy rooted more in technology than in agriculture.
