Luke McRedmond was the first to file under the Homestead Act for a spot of land adjacent to the Sammamish Slough in September 1870. Later, the "Mc" was dropped from his name and the community of Redmond began in earnest as others joined him in homesteading the area. The white settlers gradually displaced the local Native Americans who had inhabited the area for 10,000 years.
