With a population of 78,243 in 2007 on a land area of 12.5 square miles there is an average of 6,274 people per square mile this is the most densely populated area in Southern California. Lake Forest California became incorporated as a city in 1991. Since its incorporation Lake Forest has expanded its bounds to take in the communities of Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills. Several popular companies are headquartered or stationed in Lake Forest, such as Oakley Inc.—makers of the popular sunglasses—Western Digital, makers of the well known internal and external hard drives, and others like Panasonic Avionics, and Greenlight Wireless Corporation, a software developer. Lake Forest is centrally located to several areas with easy access to Interstate 5 and Interstate 405 to get to Santa Ana and San Diego, and is just a short drive from Laguna Beach. This alone makes it a desirable place to live. The use of synchronized traffic lights that began in 2007 shortened traffic and commute times, making it an even better place to live. Several famous residents live in the Lake Forest California area including a member of the Smashing Pumpkins, Chris Jacobsen the winner of the Top Chef Season 3, and Erika Cook the winner of the reality show Endurance Season 4. Lake Forest was just one mile away from the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, but the base closed its doors in 1999. | |
