Point Mugu NAWC, California is a small unincorporated area in Ventura County, located just outside the cities of Port Huenume and Oxnard. It is named for one of the two large United States Navy Bases located in Ventura County. It is suggested that the name comes from the Chumash Indian term Muwu, meaning beach. The navy port has dominated the area for nearly seven decades, and makes it one of the few areas in the Ventura County area that is not primarily dominated by agriculture or related industries. In addition to the testing station is the Point Mugu State Park that is roughly 15,000 acres of protected beaches and land meant for the viewing of birds and other mammals. Mugu Lagoon, an area located between the park and the naval base provides one of the largest coastal wetlands in Southern California that has not been largely developed. Because President Regan used the airfield during his visits to the Santa Barbara Ranch during his presidency, it was also used to honor him during the state funeral prior to his body being laid to rest in Washington, D.C.
