| Port Hueneme, California is a small port city surrounded by the city of Oxnard, in Ventura county California. This city is home to approximately 22,000 citizens as according to the 2000 census information. The name Hueneme comes from the Spanish spelling of the Chumash “wene me”, meaning "resting-place.” The area has a prime beach for surfing and spans eastward to about a mile away from the naval base and testing station. This area is the only deep-water port between the Port of Long Beach and the Port of San Francisco. It is also the only military deep-water port between San Diego Bay and Puget Sound. The harbor is a main shipping and receiving point for a wide variety of goods to distribute to the Los Angeles area, as well as many others. These products range in everything from automobiles, to various different agricultural products like bananas, onions, and strawberries. The United States Navy also maintains a facility at the port to use in support and conjunction with its other nearby facility, Point Mugu. The area of the city as provided by census statistics is 4.7 square miles, of which 4.72%, or .2 square miles, is water. | |
