Auburn, county seat of Placer County is small but steeped in one of California's most notable eras -- the Gold Rush of the mid-1800s. That gives it status as a California Historic Landmark. And in more modern times, it has gained a reputation as the undisputed and internationally acclaimed Endurance Capital of the World, a sobriquet earned by sponsorship of the Western States Endurance Run, the Western States Trail Ride, American River 50-Mile Equestrian Ride, Way Too Cool 50-kilometer Endurance Run, Auburn International Half-Ironman Triathlon, Auburn Century 100-mile Bike Ride, Coolest 24-hour Mountain Bike Race, Rio Del Lago 100-mile Endurance Run, Sierra Nevada 50-mile Endurance Run and the Coolest Run, Ride and Tie.

Whew! That's a whole lot of endurance events! Makes you wonder how many of the Auburn mobile attorneys keep themselves primed for one or more of these events. Goodness knows that keeping themselves in top shape is one of the requisites of being always on call to meet the demands for notarizing important personal documents such as wills, deeds, mortgage papers, powers of attorney, living wills. adoption and many other documents that fall into the categories that now require a seal to be authentic.

Placer mining for gold was born in the spring of 1848 when a group of French gold miners set up camp in the Auburn Ravine. The group was headed for the gold fields in Coloma, California, but found plentiful stores of the metal in the Auburn area and stayed. The Central Pacific Railroad, destined to connect with the eastbound Union Pacific Railroad in Promontory, Utah, completing the transcontinental rail line, passed through Auburn.

Auburn has capitalized on this important history by preserving hoses and retail buildings from the mid-19th Century. Included is the oldest fire station in the state and the Post Office that was in use during the Gold Rush. Supplemented by early Indian and Chinese artifacts (the Chinese were instrumental in the construction of the western portion of the national railway) they are on display in the Placer County Museum. If you're a history buff, you might arrange to meet one of the city's traveling notaries at the museum, finish up the essential business and then enjoy a step into the past. They are pledged to meet clients anywhere it is convenient, so why not a museum?

Fans of the cartoon series "Rocky and Bullwinkle" will be delighted to know that this is where the cartoons were born. Not to mention other more serious movies such as "Protocol," "Wisdom," and "The Ugly Truth." John Steinbeck's classic novel "Of Mice and Men," has the protagonists George and Lennie as being from Auburn.

The historic building known as the Traveler's Rest is part of the Bernhard Museum Complex. Traveler's Rest was built in 1851 and was popular with miners . The property became a winery in 1874, with additional buildings raised to accommodate wine production. The site is replete with "leftovers" from the Victorian era and features costumed guides to enrich the experience.

The Placer County Museum also focuses on a unique American period. It has gone through periods of decline, but with community support it has been restored and is now thriving. A gallery featuring gold artifacts is included, along with Native American items, as well as a vintage women's jail. Historical eras such as the pre-white period, the Gold Rush, transportation and communication developments and other important time periods are all represented.
