VIII and Notaries
Henry VIII was King of England. In 1538, he had been married to Catherine of Aragon for 20 years and she gave birth to a daughter. He wanted a son to take the throne and assure his future. Because Catherine did not provide him with the son, he asked the Pope for an annulment or a divorce. The Pope asked the House of Aragon in Spain if a divorce was OK with them. They said no because she was used merchandise and they would not be able to get her married off to some other royal person. The Pope had previously appointed Henry Defender of The Faith of the Roman Catholic Church of England. At the time, Ann Boelynn was pregnant with his child. He wanted a legitimate heir to the throne but needed a divorce to marry her so the child would be legitimate. He told the Pope, I am no longer Head of the Roman Catholic Church of England. I am now head and defender of the faith of the Anglican Catholic Church of England and he then appointed the Archbishop of Canterbury the head man of the Anglican church and got his divorce. He married Anne. She had a girl. He divorced her on the grounds of adultery because she had been sleeping with him while he was married to Catherine.
