Maybe Buena Park was named after the Chicago suburb of that name at the suggestion of one of the town's founders, James A. Whitaker, who hailed from the Chicago area. Maybe it was named Buena Park because of the presence of an artesian well and the surrounding park-like area. Either way, Buena Park it has been for more than a century -- and counting.

The community actually had a presence in what became northwestern Orange County from the beginning of the Spanish era through the Mexican era and into United States control. The city incorporated in 1953. It evolved from an agriculture center (dairy, wine and citrus products) into a residential suburb and commercial hub.

One of its main attractions, both for locals and the multitudes of tourists who target southern California for fun time, is Knott's Berry Farm, a 160-acre amusement park that was the 12th most-visited site of its kind in 2015. Its popularity makes it a natural for a meeting place between the city's corps of traveling notaries and people who need a notary's touch to make their important documents legal. Constant upgrades to the park have kept pace with the demands of new attendees. At Halloween time since 1973, the well-known amusement park becomes "Knott's Scary Farm," with chills and thrills enough to scare the socks off those brave enough to give it a try.

On a smaller scale and less frenetic pace is the local history park that features a clutch of historic buildings, including the Whitaker-Haynes House (now a museum), the Bacon House and the Stage Stop Hotel. The Dreger Clock, a multi-faced timepiece that graced the Knott's Berry Farm site for many years, was moved to the historic center as part of a restoration project.

Gone are the days when travelers through the area could smell the cookies being turned out by the Nabisco factory near the highway. Honey-Maid grahams, Ritz crackers and Nilla Wafers were among the sweet and tasty products of the factory until it closed in 2006.

Speaking of scary, the city also has had its share of real-life horrors. In 2009, the body of swimsuit model reality TV actress Jasmine Fiore was found, stuffed in a suitcase, in an apartment building dumpster.
