The history of Carson, California, goes back a long way. In the Civil War era, the Carson Drum Barracks served as a base for the Western activities associated with the war. Then it became a hospital. When that use ended, the land was auctioned off and for a time it was out of commission. In time, local citizens who recognized the importance of the Drum Barracks revived it as a museum.

And not just any museum. This one has two resident ghosts , one a woman named Maria and another a Civil War officer who smokes a pipe. Maria smells of lavender perfume, if you want to believe those who believe the spook tales. And there are those who do believe. Some guests not only smell lavender and pipe smoke, but they hear dragging noises, footsteps, talking where there is no sign of people and other unaccountable phenomena. If you're into the paranormal, the Drum Barracks would be a perfect place to meet one of the Carson mobile notaries. He or she can authenticate your important documents while you steel your nerves for a ghost session.

Carson has the distinction of being a base for Goodyear blimps. Currently, the airfield is home to just one blimp, the 246-foot long Spirit of America. Filled with helium to keep it aloft, the blimp soars across the skies in the vicinity of Los Angeles. The blimps are highly visible brand ambassadors, but also make for a unique air-borne experience for people who pay the fare to do on-high touristing. They are especially attractive as prime viewing seats for sports and entertainment events.

Another of the Carson attractions is the towering fiberglass statue that has stood at the Dominguez Golf Course since the 1960s to promote roadside business for the community. It has undergone several incarnations, being reborn in 2013 as a Porsche Motorsport racer, sporting a checkered flag. His fireproof suit was stitched by hand in France. After standing for decades next to the 405 freeway for decades, he disappeared for a time. But his "demise" was only temporary. Porsche was developing its new Motorsports North America Center. They installed a new version of Muffler Man, modernly outfitted in an authentic Stand 21 driving suit, but still holding his checkered flag. The company also sponsors a visitor center where you could meet with one of Carson's traveling notaries before learning more about the automotive industry. It's so simple to fit a traveling notary into a regular day, whatever you have planned.

Part of Carson's colorful past began in 1921 when the first drilling for oil at Dominguez Hill was undertaken. The drill site was where the Battle of Dominguez took place in 1846 during the Mexican-American War. It was one of the more notable battles of that conflict. The oil production gave Carson new economic advantages, including work opportunities. At its height, more than 350 oil derricks were producing an average of 300 barrels per day. The industry contributed to the city's post-war population surge. In 2011, environmental concerns put a damper on the industry in Carson.

The growth of ethnic diversity is reflected in the location of the Samoan Federation of America in the community. The organization ad vocates for thhe rights of Samoan immigrants. After the 1965 Watts rioting, South Bay College, renamed California State University/Palos Verdes, moved to Carson. It is todoy one of the most racially diverse campuses in the country.
