A party of Spanish explorers led by inveterate discoverer Junipero Serra in 1769 may have been the first non-native people to visit the area where Costa Mesa eventually evolved. The Spanish involvement gave way to the Mexican occupation of the lands in the 1800s, when a huge rancho was granted to Jose Antonio Yorba. The first non-Hispanic settlers arrived after the Mexican War found the land in the hands of the United States. They founded the little towns of Fairview and Harper, which in the course of time became Costa Mesa and a host of other communitiies that now dot the map of the area.

Want to know what Costa Mesa means? Ask one of the local mobile notaries and they'll answer your typically "Gringo" question. It means coastal mesa, or plateau. The city had a significant surge in population during and after World War II, many of the new residents the left-overs of military activity at the Santa Ana Army Base. Within three decades, the city had multiplied its population five times over.

Among that burgeoning population were people trained to be notary publics. There still are ample numbers of these professionals and they've added some nice features, such as traveling to the client rather than expecting the client to travel to them. Important papers that need signatures authenticated can be taken care of expeditiously in Costa Mesa.

There's plenty to do in this pleasant coastal city. For instance, you can join about one million others who take in the Orange County Fair each year. The fairgrounds also is host to the Annual Scarecrow and Pumpkin Festival in the fall. And the fairgrounds is convenient to the Pacific Amphitheater, which brings top-notch entertainment for local consumption.

Keep in mind that if you are enjoying the great southern California weather by bicycling between stops, you'll be in trouble with the law if you lean your bicycle up against a tree. It's on the books not only in Costa Mesa, but also in neighboring Irvine.

A lot of citrus orchards were plowed under as Costa Mesa took on the aspects of a modern city. But the aura of the past lives on in such venues as Fairview Park, where open fields, rolling hills, a forest sanctuary and a beach are holdovers from the agricultural past. After a visit to the park, you might be inspired to call one of the Costa Mesa mobile notaries to meet you at California Scenario, also known as Noguchi Garden. Get those documents signed and sealed and then take in the six sections of the garden, each representing a geographical characteristic of this part of California.

Another echo from the past is the Diego Sepulveda Adobe, or Costa Mesa Estancia, a local history museum housed in the second-oldest building in Orange County. It was built between 1817 and 1823 to provide lodging for traveling herdsmen who tended horses and cattle from Mission San Juan Capistrano to Alta. It was restored in 1940.

Culture is well-served in Costa Mesa, home to the Orange County Performing Arts Center, designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli. The center hosts the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, the Pacific Symphony and the Pacific Chorale.

All this and about a zillion great eating establishments, art galleries and super shopping opportunities. That's Costa Mesa.
