Cypress has been around for awhile. Before Spanish explorers began their journeys up and down the Pacific coast of what ultimately became California, it was the home to native tribes such as the Tongva Tribe of the Shoshone peoples.

Gaspar de Portola's expedition in August 1769 visited the area and he described the juncture of the Arroyo Seco and the Los Angeles River as a "very lush green valley." It was granted to Jose Maria Verdugo in October, 1784, and became Rancho San Rafael. Through several evolutions, it passed into the hands of Jessie D. Hunter, a member of the Mormon Battalion who acquired it on his way to Utah Territory. He stayed to farm the land. After his death in 1882, glimmerings of the modern community began. Cypress Park became the first of the Arroyo Seco communities to establish itself firmly enough to last.

What's special about Cypress Park today? The locals point with pride to the Rio de Los Angeles State Park. It was part of a reclamation project that revitalized the Los Angeles River. After the rainy season, it offers prime wild flower viewing. Sports fields, a children's playground and recreation building are among its attractions.

And, of course, now as a mature community, Cypress Park boasts a group of mobile notaries, professionals who are trained in all elements of notary work. In today's complex world, many personal documents require a notary's witness and seal to be legal. The list is long, including deeds, wills, mortgage papers and a plethora of others. The mobile notaries in Cypress Park have them well in hand. And they will meet a client anywhere and anytime it is convenient for that client.

That meeting place could be the LA River Center and Gardens, located on the former site of Lawrey's California Cente. More than six acres feature mission-style buildings and gardens. Environmental groups see it as an ideal meeting place.

The Huron Substation recalls an earlier era when electric trains were the popular mode of travel in California. The station was headquarters for the Yellow Car System in the early 1900s. The site also sports the Jeffries House, built in 1911 for the brother of James J. Jeffries ,then- heavyweight boxing champion of the world.

The city has been the location for a number of feature films and television productions, include the series "Heroes." A local bar, Footsies, was immortalized in the music video to the song "Live Your Life," by T.I., featuring Rihanna.
