It took the business eye of William Davis Merry Howard to see the possibilities of the area now comprising Hillsborough. He was the son of a wealthy Hillsboro, New Hampshire, shipping magnate. Young Howard sailed on a ship from Boston, around Cape Horn and up the West Coast to scout out the land and returned home to convince his father that there was money to be made in the Western HIllsborough, named for the family's holdings in New Hampshire, but spelled more fancy.

In 1846, the family purchased property in the old Rancho San Mateo Mexican land grant and settled in to make his dreams come true. Wealthy San Franciscans were attracted to the area and joined in efforts to develop the land.

The town incorporated in 1910 with a total of 89 registered voters in a city that boasted 750 men, women and children. The move was largely a defense against neighboring communities that were casting their eyes on the Hillsborough assets.

The founders had the foresight to make a killing in the Gold Rush era, not by taking their chances on finding gold, but finding gold in providing necessary items for the prospectors.

Over time, the large estates, relics of a land-grant era, were broke up into smaller parcels, often leaving the original home intact, surrounded by several acres of land. Residents have manipulated their community's laws to maintain the "nature of HIllsborough," with opportunities of respite from the San Francisco, the big city it abuts. The community has won plaudits for its award-winning schools and exemplary services.

The town's residents (11,273 as of 2013) include a cadre of traveling notaries who are thoroughly trained in all the various personal documents that require a witness and seal to be authentic. The are mobile for good reason. It makes it easy for clients when they can call, made an appointment for any place that is convenient, and get the job done at their convenience. Today's busy world calls for an ever-increasing number of personal documents that require a notary's witness and seal to be legal. The ready availability of a mobile notary is a significant community asset.

Don't miss the unusual "Flintstone House," a creative design of architect William Nicholson. It can be seen from northbound Highway 280 between the Bunker HIll and Hayne/Black Mountain exits. Nicholson created a "bulbous" residence in which every surface is rounded. It looks like a bunch of balloons. In fact, it is a cluster of aeronautical balloons reinforced with cement, rebar, plaster putty, and wire mesh. The segments were then sprayed with concrete. Certainly different, it incorporates three bedrooms, two baths and a two-car garage, with some 2,700 square feet of living space.

There are other, more conventional places to see in Hillsborough, including Carolands, one of the largest residences in the country. It was built for Pullman Railway heiress Harriet Pullman Carolan and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

A statue of Junipero Serra, one of California's earliest explorers, overlooks Highway 280. Lots to see and do in this town.
