In July 1769, members of the Portola Expedition of Spanish explorers went through a natural pass in what later became Orange County and gave it a name, La Habra or "Pass Through the Hills." It stuck and today La Habra is a thriving community of some 60,300 residents, according to the 2010 U.S. Census.

In its early days, the area was home to vast herds of horses and cattle that grazed its hills and valleys. In 1839, Mariano Reyes Roldan was granted 6,698 acres of land and by 1896, La Habra was a bona fide town, with a post office located inCoy's Store. The town incorporated in 1925 with some 3,000 residents. It was noted as "the city south of La Habra Heights," where the firsrt Hass Avocado tree had been planted by Rudolph Hass in the 1920s. It became one of the most popular avocados in the world and the original tree lasted until 2002, when it succumbed to root rot.

Among those who now call La Habra home are a number of mobile notaries who are eager to take their skills to any location where there is a person in need of the official signature and seal that make a document legal. They are trained and knowledgeable about all the many papers that now fall into that category. All it takes to get in touch with one of these professionals is phone call.

The city gave its name to the La Habra Stakes, a horse race run at the Santa Anita Park Thoroughbred race track, an event that has taken place since 1973.

In the crazy quilt that is southern California, La Habra claims geographical location in Orange County, but it contracts with Los Angeles County for fire and police services. That means that the city shared in the not-so-nice distinction of being the third-ranked law agency in the county for the number of officer-related shootings among 20 Orange County police departments.

In the 2007 shooting death of Michael Cho, a lawsuit resulted in a $250,000 wrongful death claim against the city.

On the positive side of the ledger, the city was home to a number of notables, including Brent Boyd of the Minnesota Vikings, who led out in a crusade to make the prevalence of concussion injuries known and considered by leaders of the sport. Also on the "home-town" list are guitarist/singer/songwriter Rusty Anderson and Boyd Coddington, famed hot rod builder.

And that's not to mention one Richard Milhouse Nixon, former U.S. president. A plaque marks the site of his former law office. It says he "established a law office in this building in August 1939." He practiced in La Habra until 1942. When the building was demolished in the 1990s, the plaque was preserved on a brick pedestal made from bricks from the original building.

You could visit this historic spot and make it the destination for a meeting with one of the La Habra traveling notaries. Get him or her to witness the official signature on your new will and put on the authenticating seal. It takes only minutes and then you can rest easy, knowing that your assets will be taken care of to your specific directions when you are no longer around.
