Tucked into the southeast corner of Los Angeles County, La Mirada is known as one of the Gateway Cities. It proudly boasts its designation as one of CNN What doeMagazine's Best Places To Live cities.

Andrew McNally (of Rand McNally publishing fame) recognized the community's potential in the late 1880s, purchasing more than 2,200 acres of the Rancho Los Coyotes land to set up a town. On 700 of those acres, he developed his Windermere Ranch, surrounded by olive, orange and lemon groves. Then he promoted a railroad stop in the town so he could ship his high-quality oil all across the United States.

Like many endeavors, La Mirada had small beginnings. In 1946, it had a population of 213 and olives, oranges and lemons were still the economic mainstay. Then city planning, a notion that planted deep roots in California, came along. La Mirada was referred to in publicity hype as "the Nation's completely planned city." And could such a city fail to have a cadre of traveling notaries to meet the needs of its citizens? Of course not. There are a number of highly qualified notaries here to witness signatures and apply their seals to all kinds of official documents that demand the notary's touch to be legal. All you have to do is call, and one will be where you choose at the time you choose at your convenience.

In 1953, La Mirada's land base was sold to subdivisions for $5.2 million, one of the largest real estate transactions in the state's history. Soon, more than 8,000 homes dotted the landscape. Incorporation occurred on March 23, 1960, with Mirada Hills as the official name. Later that year, the name was changed to La Mirada.

What does one do for entertainment in La Mirada? Start with the La Mirada Theater, which won the Ovation Award for the best season in 2012-13. You'd be in good company. More than three million people have been in attendance at one or another (or more) of the theater's 4,000-plus performances. Recognitions have poured in from theater and entertainment groups and the Los Angeles Times once dubbed it "one of the best Broadway-style houses in Southern California."

The city (population close to 46,000 in the 2000 Census) is home to Biola University, a private Evangelical Christian school that boasts 40 majors in six schools. It was founded in 1908 as the Bible Institute of Los Angeles by Lyman Stewart, president of Union Oil Co. of California.

In Spanish, La Mirada means "the look." That should tell you that there is plenty to see and to do in this old but progressive Los Angeles suburb.
