La Quinta's reputation as a resort town has brought a lot of growth to the community. Between the censuses in 2000 and 2010, the population grew from 23,694 to 37,467. It is reported to be the top draw for golfers in the United States. Not bad for an area that was declared "uninhabitable" by federal land surveyors in the early 1900s.

One of the resorts that attracts golfers is La Quinta Resort and Club, where, in 1926, movie director Frank Capra could be found working on the script for "Lost Horizon." Add to that the Quarry, a course designed by Tom Fazio, and the Arnold Palmer Classic Course at the Silver Rock Golf Resort and you have a golfer's Paradise. The Palmer course was one of the four host courses for the annual Bob Hope Chrysler Classic PGA tournament.

Before there was golf, there was agriculture, with modern irrigation responsible for desert crops. It took the foresight of people such as Walter Morgan, who established the LaQuinta Resort in 1926, to see beyond agriculture to new economic horizons. The community incorporated in 1982. Exactly when the city became home to a group of eminently qualified traveling notaries has been lost to history, but their presence is well known to La Quintans who seek their services to authenticate important personal documents. Arranging a meeting to have the notary's witness and seal added to a document is as simple as picking up a telephone. They are committed to meeting clients when and where it is convenient. For instance, in La Quinta it would make good sense to meet at one of the area resorts so the notary's work could be completed just in time for tee-off.

High-quality resort cities are a magnet for notable people and LaQuinta has had many of them. Two of the city's restaurants, in fact, were founded by such notables -- the late golf champion founded the Arnold Palmer Restaurant and Devane's Old Town is owned and operated by actor William Devane. Famed singer/TV personality Andy Williams had a home here, as well as another in Branson, Mo. Dorothy Hamill of Olympic ice skating fame was a resident and Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard led a reclusive life on his secretive ranch from 1973 to the early 1980s. TV personality Merv Griffin was one of the principal movers behind the annual La Quinta Arts Festival and instrumental in developing the Griffin Ranch, a top-notch equestrian resort and residential neighborhood. Singer Jack Jones is a current resident. Toni Tennille and Daryl Dragon of Captain and Tenille were residents as were professional golfers Fred Couples and Monte Scheinblum.

A popular local oddity is the giant metal roadrunner that graces the center of a traffic circle. It began life a few miles away as a feature of the Coachella Music Festival, but ended through some local wheeling and dealing in the traffic circle. The two communities benefit equally from the annual music festival. As originally designed, the roadrunner held a swing in its beak, inviting festival goers to take break for a little swing time. In the transfer to the traffic circle at Jefferson Street and Avenue 52 in La Quinta, it lost the swing.
