The importance of the estate to the economic well-being of the city was noted in a declaration in 1990 that recognized it as a historic site. With dozens of high-ranking Americans and leaders from other countries flitting in and out, it grained a reputation as the "Camp David of the West."

The development of the Betty Ford Center, a highly visible addiction rehabilitation treatment facility, added a special service to the Eisenhower Hospital, attracting an array of well-known clients.

Wealth and notoriety are nice but not necessary to make a home in Rancho Mirage. Many whose names never get into the news live here and share in the beautiful desert climate and the amenities of a resort city.
