And the neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley now boasts of residents such as Miley Cyrus, Viola Davis and Melissa McCarthy.

Heady stuff! The town gets its name from a man-made lake that is fed by the Los Angeles River and maintained by neighboring property owners. There was a natural lake there years ago, but it succumbed to the march of progress that saw the river channeled into concrete courses. As the water table shrank, the lake disappeared until the Toluca Lake Property Owners Association resurrected it in its present form.

Once part of the Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana, the area now encompassed by Toluca Lake community officially began in 1893 with a petition for a post office. In the same year, trains of the Southern Pacific Railroad began to journey in and out of the town en route to other southern California locations. Even earlier, it was the site of the Kern River Co., a power operation that delivered electricity from its generators to Los Angeles environs. The area produced fine crops of peaches, apples and walnuts as well.

Its more modern development began in the 1920s with the advent of Toluca Lake Park, a housing vision that failed, but opened the way for additional development. Investors envisioned one of the first "bedroom communities" to serve the Los Angeles area. Just when the town's cadre of traveling notaries arrived may be lost to history, but they have for many years provided a critical service for Toluca Lake residents. The list of other notables who have been at home here is long and contains the names of such as Amelia Earhart, who daring as an early aviatrix ended with her disappearance on a flight; Bob Hope, who lived there until his death in 2003 at the age of 100; Bette Davis, W.C. Fields, Dorothy Lamour, Billie Dove, Dick Powell and Bing Crosby. Frank Sinatra moved in in the 1940s and William Holden hosted the Reagan's wedding reception noted above. More recently, Justin Bieber, Steve Carell, KirstenDunst and Octavia Spencer have put Toluca Lake addresses on their official mailings.

Toluca Lake occupies just 1.2 square miles of California, but it offers a lot to see and do. Bob's Big Boy, that chubby, overall-bedecked purveyors of hamburgers, draws hundreds of folks who want a picture taken with him. Friday nights at Bog Boy's place often attract visitors to car shows, with vintage autos filling the parking lot.

Riverside Drive is a magnet for the shopping buffs in the area. Niche shops and boutiques supplant the retailers and big-box stores for some unique browsing experiences.
