Tucked into a canyon, Topanga features one of the largest largest parks surrounded by a city in the world. Topanga State Park is part of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and represents a California coastal sage and chaparral eco-region. California oak woodlands and a wide variety of native plants thrive in the park.

The name has been around for awhile, having been used by the indigenous Tongva Indians to describe "a place above." It was the western border of their traditional lands and they left signature carvings in rock outcroppings in the area as permanent markers of their occupation of the land.

The canyon became a popular weekend get-away for Hollywood celebs craving peace, and some small cottages were built for that purpose. The verdant rolling hillls provided both seclusion and an attractive atmosphere for the "escapees."

It built on its Bohemian reputation during the 1960s, attracting a variety of performance artists such as David Briggs, who recorded most of his "After the Gold Rush" album in his basement studio. Neil Young and Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys were at home in the canyon. Linda Ronstadt reportedly has been seen hitch-hiking the canyon barefoot with her guitar.

Not so well known but as important to the life of the community (8,289 at the last census) is a group of traveling notaries. Need a document witnessed and notarized? It's as easy as a phone call. These qualified professionals specialize in taking services to the client, wherever and whenever. In an era when time is of the essence, that's a considerable advantage.

First class entertainers such as Canned Heat, Little Feat, Spanky and Our Gang, Taj Mahal, Emmylou Harris, Bob Denver, Neil Diamond and Russ Tamblyn were among those on the agenda at the Topanga Corral.

Big-time entertainment rotated in and out of the city on a regular basis, appearing frequently at the Topanga Corral. After the Corral burned to the ground in 1970, it was rebuilt and hosted a new sort of entertainer as punk music took center stage. The nightclub was again a victim of fire in 1986 and was not rebuilt.

On the seamier side, the Manson Family, whose murderous exploits are chronicled in the book "Helter Skelter," started their rampage in Topanga, killing Gary Hinman, a music teacher who had opened his home to down-and-outers.

With a history of entertainment-focused activity, a film festival was a natural. It is held each July and its aim is to bridge cultures, create and expand community, provide cultural exchange and networking opportunities for those in the field.

Trails abound through the picturesque canyon, with streams, waterfalls, areas of exposed bedrock, landmark rock outcroppings and panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Los Angeles. Arrange to meet one of the city's mobile notaries at a trail head, have him or her witness your signature on your new will and you're off, worry-free, on a Topanga adventure.
