Trivia question! Where is the third largest oil field in the United States? And in case you guess that it's in some isolated spot somewhere out in the country, you're wrong. It's in Wilmington, a small neighborhood in the Los Angeles Harbor area.

Wilmington covers just 9.14 square miles and is noted for a relatively young and diverse population, with many Latino and foreign-born residents. It's heavy on education for its size, home to Los Angeles Harbor College and a plethora of public and private schools. It boasts six parks, including one on the waterfront.

Not bad for a little place that had its modern beginnings in a 1784 Spanish land grant. In 1858, a group of ambitious men purchased part of the grant to build a seaport for the city of Los Angeles. In 1863 Wilmington became a city in its own right (named after the birthplace of Phineas Banning, the "Father of the Harbor.") In 1909, it became allied with Los Angeles and along with San Pedro became one of the largest import-export centers in the world.

The oil field was discovered in 1932 and today there are at least eight major refineries in the are, many dating back to that first strike. Another major discovery, although the date has not been recorded in the city's history, is the advent of mobile notaries who serve Wilmington on a whenever/wherever basis. Just call. There will be a well-trained and helpful notary at your service within a short time. Today's meticulous business transactions call for many papers to be notarized, not to mention the many personal documents you create that you want to be officially authenticated.

The Wilmington Oil Field has maintained steady production, largely through very modern technology that drills lines directionally from the field to four artificial islands in Long Beach Harbor. In 2002, geologists estimated that some 90 percent of the original reserve had been captured, but some 900 million barrels still remain before the oil is spent, according to a 2013 estimate.

During World War II, thousands of soldiers and sailors boarded ships in the Los Angeles Port of Embarkation for deployment to the battlefronts around the world. The California Shipbuilding Corporation, famous for it "victory ships" during the worldwide conflict, also was located in Wilmington.

Even earlier in American history annals, the U.S. Army headquarters for California and Arizona Territory were located here during the Civil War. That history is held in the Drum Barracks Civil War Museum, where you might arrange to meet with a Wilmington notary before taking a tour. The Banning Museum, honoring the city's founder, is housed in the 23-room mansion he built in 1864.

At Halloween, the "world's largest Jack-O-Lantern" attracts thousands of visitors. It really is the Phillips 66 Refinery's 3-million gallon storage tank, decked out for the holiday. It has been a Halloween attraction since 1952 (when it was owned by Union Oil) and part of the fun is guessing what it will appear as each year.

So, that's Wilmington -- a coastal jewel, oil producer par excellence, Jack-O-Lantern king and home to a group of really accommodating mobile notaries.
