People have been living in the site now occupied by Agoura Hills for at least 10,000 years, starting from, when the Chumash Native Americans ranged the hills looking for food. That must mean that it's a good spot for humans. Today's residents, including a group of traveling notaries who serve the local populace, seem to think so.

The community's more modern history began with exploration and settlement by the Spanish in the late 18th Century. The Agoura Hills, were in fact, right at the center of the El Camino Real (the King's Highway) that connected the sprawling missions the Spaniards founded from Loreto, Baja California, to Sonoma to the north.

By 1900, the community still was serving travelers making their trips by stagecoach. Some were tempted to stay awhile to enjoy the natural springs along the foothills of Ladyface Mountain. In the 1920s, it was known for a time as Picture City because Paramount Pictures owned a ranch in the vicinitiy used for filming early oaters. But to get a post office, residents had to choose a one-word name. They chose Agoura, a misspelling of the name Agoure, which belonged to a local Basque immigrant who had settled there in 1871 and lived the lifestyle of a Mexican rancher.

Now, about those mobile notaries. They are professionals who train to handle important documents that have to be authenticated to become legal. There is a growing number of such documents that must have signatures witnessed and an attesting seal attached by these authorized agents They run the gamut from sales documents to wills, deeds, powers of attorney and a glut of others. You can summon a traveling notary by a simple phone call and meet when and where it is convenient.

Of course, there was a lot of growth that took place in Agoura Hills before the advent of mobile notaries. In fact, a growing desire to put limits on how large the community could grow was somewhat the story of the area in the 1980s and 1990s. Incorporation in 1982 was spurred by discontent that Los Angeles County was not doing anything to curb growth. Other incipient cities in the area followed suit, bailing out of the county in favor of more local control.

The city lies in the California chapparal and woodlands ecoregion that boasts hundreds of plant and animal species, including endangered species ranging from mountain lions to the steelhead trout.

What do folks in Agoura Hills do for entertainment? They have a choice. Modern music lovers tune into the local music scene that has fostered such musicians as Linkin Park, Dub Thompson, Skye Aspen, Incubus, Hoobastank and Fort Minor. Although some of these original rockers have moved on to other pursuits, leaving a decline in the genre, the echos live on. You still can catch a show at the Canyon Club and see touring acts of the country's leading metal artists.

The Reyes Adobe Historical Site preserves some of the early history. Built in about 1850, it has been preserved and now is the repository for artifacts and documents that tell the story of the growth of Agoura Hills. Make it a point to meet with a mobile notary at the Adobe, complete your essential documents, rest assured that they will pass legal muster and then enjoy a trip back into the days of Spanish missionaries and El Camino Real.
